AAERT White Paper - Analysis and Advantages of Digital Court Reporting and Recording in the Courts, Deposition, and Administrative Hearings Markets

AAERT and its Government Relations Committee are proud to announce the release of a White Paper entitled Analysis and Advantages of Digital Court Reporting and Recording in the Courts, Deposition, and Administrative Hearings Markets. The paper is a detailed look at the benefits of using digital court reporting and transcribing to produce a verbatim/official record of any type of proceeding.

Electronic/digital recording has been used in various venues as a means of preserving the official record for the past 40 years. During this time the use of digital reporting has expanded tremendously in both the numbers of venues and the types of venues. This growth is due to many factors, but primarily:

• Digital reporting/transcribing produces an accurate record that is completely verifiable. Transcription can quickly and easily be checked against the audio/video recording.

Timely delivery and prompt access to the record. Because the method is much less idiosyncratic than older methods of reporting, a large, trained workforce is available to ensure that the record goes from the proceeding to the page accurately and promptly.

• Significant cost savings. When amortized over time, the cost of digital reporting systems (which continues to be lower) combined with the significantly lower personnel cost represent a very clear economic advantage for digital reporting/transcribing.

Advances in technology will continue to boost the efficiency and utility of digital recording systems, but the key to producing a timely and accurate official record will remain the digital reporters and transcribers. Properly trained, certified, and employing AAERT Best Practices, this growing professional corps will ensure that digital reporting and transcribing continues to meet the demands of courts, attorneys, and agency clients.

This White Paper is the result of many, many hours of work by a number of people, and I would especially like to thank Geoff Hunt as the driving force behind it from conception to publication. Also, to the AAERT Board members (past and present) and staff who have contributed and to our many vendors and colleagues in the industry – thank you for your help and support.
