Financing a Dream
by Lisa Luciano, CET & Ilene Watson, CET (Access Transcripts, LLC)

A little more than a year ago we decided to venture into business together and we created Access Transcripts, LLC.  We were fortunate to have a large contract already in place upon formation of the company, and that kept steady work coming our way while we sought to expand our court base.  When we started Access, our one big dream was to attend the AAERT conference with our company profits.  Our business plan consisted of paying ourselves (and our subcontractors) a fair page rate for our work, but we made sure that the company retained 50 cents off the top for every page produced to cover our overhead and generate profit.

We are happy to report that our business model did exactly what we had hoped, and as of now we have enough in our bank account to cover our overhead for 18 months and to cover an all-expenses-paid trip for both of us to Orlando in June!  This includes the conference fee, sponsorship fee plus promotional items for attendee gift bags, a luxurious hotel for three nights, airfare for both of us, a rental car, and all meals and entertainment, fully paid from the profits we've made in just over a year.

It's amazing to see our dream come to fruition, and it has made us realize that no dream is too big if you set your mind to it and plan accordingly.  Fifty cents a page may not seem like much, but when you add it up over the course of a year, it's enough to finance our dream and then some!
