President's Message - April 2016
by: Buck Ewing

Dear AAERT Colleagues,

I hope you are well and enjoying the spring weather.

As a new addition to T-Team Management, Maria Tannen, Michael’s niece, is taking on some of Michael’s duties in order to free him up to serve more in the role of CEO than Executive Director. Michael now has more time to work closely with the committee chairs and their initiatives. Thank you, Michael! Welcome Maria!

I also want to extend a warm welcome to Betsy Ertel, our newest member of the Board, who has been a longtime member and active supporter of AAERT. She is always ready to pitch in and help and has served in leadership roles in a variety of associations. We’re lucky to have Betsy on board, and she has accepted the appointment as the new chair of the Education Committee. Thank you, and welcome, Betsy!

“The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it away from you.” -B.B. King. While we expect our members to all be highly proficient and well-trained, generally our individual knowledge and skills are hard won. We want to offer our members more ways for them to learn and train. Last year AAERT adopted a comprehensive set of standards for reporting and transcription that we all can be proud of. The Board is now evaluating options for teaching and training curricula, courses, and classes so our members can excel as reporters, transcribers, proofreaders and other allied professions.

The theme of this newsletter is education and training. We want every member to be proficient in their work, to be able to climb the ladder to certification, and to find a position in court reporting, transcribing, or any other court-related position. The natural progression is (a) a desire to enter the field, (b) get educated, (c) get trained and practice, (d) obtain your certification, and (d) pursue and obtain the job you want.

To keep you up on what’s been happening in AAERT, committee chairs have prepared summaries of their activities and accomplishments.

Following Steve Townsend’s and my interest in updating our bylaws and the Policy and Procedures Manual, I appointed a Bylaws Task Force. It is chaired by Linda Rohman, who is not only an attorney and former civil litigator, but also the president of General Reporting Services. She will lead the task force through a process of refining our bylaws and putting in place the policies and procedures to implement them. We are lucky to have Linda as our chair. Thank you, Linda!

It’s election time again, and you have received your ballot. Remember to vote! There are three open board seats and four candidates. Just as our Presidential candidates often broadcast, “Let’s make this year’s voter turnout the greatest ever!”

And mark your calendars! AAERT’s 2016 Conference & Executive Forum will be held for four days, June 22-25, at the Renaissance Phoenix Downtown Hotel. Sign up, join in, learn, and network. You can also earn Continuing Education Credits (CEUs). Check the AAERT calendar to see the updated program schedule. Register now! You don’t want to miss it.

Finally, my term as your President will end during the annual conference. There are so many members of the Board, committee chairs, and other members who have volunteered their time and worked so hard this year on behalf of the Association, that I want to wholeheartedly thank them. In particular, I want to acknowledge:

Gail Malm Armstrong, CER, CET (Editor-in-Chief of “The Court Reporter” and Chair of Social Media Subcommittee)
Jim Bowen, CER (Past President and member of Certification Committee)
K.C. Corbin, CER, CET (Chair of Non-Dues Revenue Subcommittee and Chair
of Nominating Committee)
Lisa Dees (Chair, Membership Committee)
Geoffrey Hunt (Secretary; Chair of Communications Committee and Website Design Subcommittee)
Dena Page (Board member and member of Certification Committee)
Linda Rohman (Chair of Bylaws Task Force)
Rick Russell (Treasurer; Chair of Government Relations Committee)
Steve Townsend (Vice President; Chair of Conference Committee)
Raymond Vetter, CER (Chair of Certification Committee and member of
Education Committee)
Tonie Wallace (Former Chair, member of Education Committee)

I wish you all a happy and productive spring.

With best regards,

Buck Ewing

President, AAERT
