President's Message

As 2011 nears its close, like many, I find myself reviewing the many twists and turns taken along the way:

- a year of loss, with key members passing away;

- a year of challenges in revising and redrafting our certification and strategic processes;

- a year of growth, through the recognition of tremendous success and potential for the digital reporting industry through the Planning Task Force's State of the Industry video;

- and a year of change in the court reporting world, as a former NCRA president joins a leading digital reporting company and Mark Golden announcing his resignation as executive director of the NCRA.

AAERT Conference 2012 is coming to Philadelphia, "YES!"

You, too, will have the chance to jump like "Rocky" when you attend our 19th Annual AAERT Conference in the City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia.  It all starts on Thursday, June 21st with registration and a Welcome Reception. Educational Sessions all day Friday and Saturday, with our Annual Meeting to be held at a luncheon on Saturday.

Traveling will be easy whether you'll be flying into the Philadelphia Airport, using our discounted rate offers from Amtrak, or driving and parking using our reduced parking fees negotiated with the hotel.  Our host hotel will be the Crowne Plaza Philadelphia, located in the heart of the city, blocks away from City Hall and walking distance to celebrated restaurants and historic touring attractions.

Our Conference Education Committee, led by Michele Lilley, CET*D, is already hard at work filling the educational time slots.  A full schedule will be announced within the next month, and registration will open in February. If you would like to offer suggestions on sessions you would like to see at the conference, or if you would like to be a part of the committee, feel free to email Michele.

Look for more information coming to your inbox soon, but first thing's first, Save-The-Date, June 21st to the 23rd, 2012, Philadelphia.

Executive Corner

Oh yes, it's the holiday season. Whether you celebrate the holidays or not, it's hard not to at least appreciate the cold, or in some cases cooler, nights, being surrounded by family and friends, and the many great deals that you can find in your local shops and malls. Today, we don't just have the "Black Friday" shopping to scoop up the best deals on those gifts. Technology is continuing to change our lifestyles and our spending habits. Now we have "Green Monday" or "Cyber Monday", the biggest online sales day in December. Then we had Monday, December 12th, 2011 as the "biggest shipping day" for FedEx and other shipping companies. Why? Because we, the buying public went online and bought, bought, bought the best deals we could find. We used technology, instead of wasting gas and fighting the crowds. Oh, what a year!

And what a year we see on the horizon for AAERT. Technology continues to grow in our courtrooms and people are taking notice, personally and politically. Some nineteen years ago, we had many in our Association that truly were the Steve Jobs of electronic reporting. For the Full Article...

Karen Samcoe Retires from AVTranz, One of AAERT's Originals

After almost 20 years in the electronic court reporting and transcribing industry, Karen Samcoe is hanging up her headphones and retiring from AVTranz, previously A/V Tronics, Inc.

Karen's career began in California in 1992 when her brother, Steve Townsend, then owner of A/V Tronics, Inc., invited her to join the company. After accepting, Karen was trained and began working in Santa Monica covering hearings in the Superior Court and various municipal courts in the Los Angeles area, in addition to government agencies around the western United States.

By mid-1994, when California was on the verge of eliminating electronic reporting in their courtrooms, the decision was made to close the California office of A/V Tronics, Inc.... Read the Full Article...

The Nature of Words

I am fairly well attuned to the great variety of birds that appear in central Texas, but turning a page of my daily bird calendar, I was bemused to see the name Hepatic Tanager. I am familiar with hepatic in the medical sense, being of or related to the liver, from the Latin hepaticus, by way of the Greek hepar, liver. Is this a bird that likes liver? Probably not. Pertaining to flora or fauna, hepatic means dark reddish-brown or of the liverwort family.

As to tanager, the bird is of a group of songbirds and was named in 1758 by the... Read the Full Article...

 Blessing for Court Reporters
AAERT Member Bill Parsons invites AAERT members to view The Blessing for Court Reporters, The Electronic Reporter's Creed, and the Court Reporter Patron Saint's Card at his website The Court Reporter's Museum.

To view The Court Reporter's Blessing

To view The Electronic Reporter's Creed. (You can click the creed to enlarge it.)

To view The Court Reporter Patron Saint's Card

Bill prepared a special version of the patron saint's card especially for electronic reporters where there was a blessing of just the skills and not the hands, but that version is not available on the Internet. The version on the Internet was written for stenotype reporters with a blessing of the hands and skills.

If anyone wishes a copy of the electronic reporter's version of the patron saint's card with a blessing of just the skills, they may contact Bill, and he will send them a copy of the card.

Also, if anyone would like a copy of The Electronic Reporter's Creed suitable for framing, they may contact Bill, and he will send them a copy.

To contact Bill for the electronic file of The Court Reporter's Blessing, a hard copy of The Electronic Reporter's Creed suitable for framing, or  copies of the electronic reporter's version of the patron saint's card, you may e-mail him at

Please include your mailing address in your request for the creed and patron saint's card.

You are receiving The Court Reporter as an AAERT membership benefit.
