Digital Court Reporting Technology - The Paradigm Shift

Technology is at the center of the AAERT 2019 Executive Forum. At the Executive Forum, court reporting and transcription firm owners will learn about the current and future trends in technology for digital court reporting and transcription. Registration starts at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, March 29, 2019, and the exhibition hall opens at 10:00 a.m. Vendors will be available for informative discussions and demonstrations with attendees. President Geoff Hunt will open the Executive Forum at the welcome lunch with an Introduction and History of AAERT.

Our keynote address, The Paradigm Shift and the Choices You Will Make, will be delivered by Martin H. Block, Ph.D., Past President, NCRA. The afternoon sessions will be conducted by industry experts Janet Harris, CER, CET, VP Corporate Development at eScribers, and SueLynn Morgan, LSSGB, CSM, CSR, Consultant of The Morgan Group. Janet and SueLynn will conduct a digital deposition demonstration, The Four D’s - Demonstration, Digital, Depositions, and Differences, before moving into their second session Tools and Terms of Digital Court Recording. Friday wraps up with a cocktail hour with the vendors.

On Saturday, March 30, 2019, the exhibition hall opens at 8:00 a.m. To open the second day of the conference, we are joined by Martin Gruen, Deputy Director Emeritus, Center for Legal and Court Technology, William & Mary School of Law, who will speak about the Past, Present & Future of Digital Court Reporting. The second morning session will be presented by Merritt Gilbert, VP of Business Operations, Orange Legal and Instructor, BlueLedge, and Jill Percy, Director of Court Reporting, Orange Legal. Merritt and Jill will give their perspectives on Transitioning to and Embracing Digital Court Reporting - How to Make it Work for You. During the lunch, the attendees will be updated on Existing Legislation & State Practices and

Saturday afternoon, President Geoff Hunt will be the moderator for two important panel discussions. First, Education, Training and Certification for Digital Court Reporters will be comprised of panelists Betsy Ertel, AHDI-F, CEO SpeedType™, AAERT Education Chair, AAERT Treasurer; Lisa Hubacher, Instructor, Madison Area Technical College; Benjamin Jaffee, MBA, Manager of Digital Training and Development, BlueLedge and Adjunct Instructor, University of Central Florida. The session will address AAERT school approval, best practices, student recruitment, AAERT certification, and other important matters. The second panel discussion, Digital Court Reporting - Lessons Learned & Moving Forward, will be comprised of
digital court recording vendors. This session will address the path digital court reporting technology has taken and the current and future technology offerings for the court reporting field. The final session of the Executive Forum, presented by Michal Roche of VERBIT, will prepare us all for Integrating Artificial Intelligence into the Reporting and Transcription Markets.

Gillian Lawrence is a past board member and past president of AAERT. In the 1990s she worked as a contract court transcriber for Eleanor R. Hall Transcribing in Bakersfield, California doing contract work for both Los Angeles County and Orange County courts. This work was during a pilot court recording and transcription program for these California counties. Upon moving to Florida, she then worked as a digital court reporter for the Ninth Judicial Circuit in Orlando, Florida. In 2006 she was hired by the Eighteenth Judicial Circuit in Sanford, Florida to create, open and manage the court reporting department. In 2013 she opened and currently manages Lawrence Court Transcription & Video, LLC.
