President's Message

by James Bowen, CER

Although it seems longer, just one week ago I was in Orlando, Florida enjoying a round of golf at the Villas of Grand Cypress.  I had just spent the weekend there with the AAERT Board of Directors and T-Team Management at our Mid-Year Board of Directors meeting.  The Board plowed its way through a very extensive 1-1/2 day agenda.  These face-to-face meetings are always very productive and much was accomplished.  Our 2014 operating budget was approved and topics ranging from brand marketing to online certification to the June 2014 Annual Conference were all discussed.  And as is always the case, we have come out of the meetings tasked with much to do.  I want to personally thank all of the AAERT Directors and T-TEAM Management for taking the time away from their businesses, jobs and families to help AAERT plot a course for 2014.
After an uneventful two-hour flight from Orlando to Philadelphia, reality set back in ....

Executive Corner

by Michael F. Tannen, CSEP

As we continue to talk about a "Plan B” for you and your company, all I had to do was turn on my TV and find my research for this Executive Corner.  It seems the news in the last few weeks was all about Target, Neiman Marcus and Michaels Stores.  Why?  Not because of the big sales they were having, even though a great sale can be a good thing.  No, it was about how over 40 million people have had their account information compromised, and it continues to grow as I began writing this article.  So, let’s talk about cyber security and ways to protect your identity.
          Tell me your ....

Mentoring Elaine

by Gail Malm Armstrong, CERT

Successful mentoring becomes a unique journey. The end result can be very gratifying and a fascinating experience you will never forget. A mentor is one who advises, guides, instructs, or tutors. Let me tell you about mentoring Elaine.
I met Elaine when I was very young, still in school, and trying to decide what kind of work I should pursue after graduation. She was thirty years my senior. Elaine started in a very different work environment during World War II. She worked in a world of Royal manual typewriters with black and red cloth ribbons, carbon paper, Gregg shorthand, and black dial telephones. Her work career started in a typing pool at White Motors, Cleveland, Ohio. She was then promoted to the Parts Department, and her job consisted of cross-checking truck part numbers all day with a partner. At times the work was so tedious that her partner might even doze off! From there Elaine went to work for a patent attorney, and hence her connection to the legal world was forged.

"Digital Voice Preservation-Preserving Interpreted Testimony On The Record"

by Elegra R. Davis, CERT

During December of 2013, most of the world, particularly the deaf community, was up in arms over the sign language interpreter covering Nelson Mandela’s memorial service. After what was intended to be such a momentous occasion, deaf Mandela supporters were left confounded at such an appalling act. Looking on the bright side, though, there's an important silver lining for the deaf community: voice preservation.

Because the original speakers’ voices were captured through the network’s audio/video feed, those heartfelt moments can be recreated. Voice preservation still enables a skilled, qualified sign language interpreter to verify and interpret the statements made during the memorial. With voice preservation, true accuracy can be produced to eliminate communication barriers. What good news! An important piece of world history can be accurately preserved for all.

The Nature of Words
by Laurel Stoddard, CET

As I was meandering through the dictionary, I decided to jot down a handful or two of words that, one, I enjoy and, two, that are little changed from their native roots. Some words are just fun to say. I'm reminded of Buddy the Elf, who found the name Francisco particularly satisfying to repeat. Gallimaufry, a hodgepodge or jumble, comes from the Middle French galimafree, which meant ragout or stew. I've always enjoyed the word hinterland and only recently realized it's German in origin, meaning "hinder land," the land behind.   Read the Full Article

Punctuation is Powerful!

by Beverly Guenette, CET

Insure - use when it involves financial liability or protection, most commonly by obtaining an insurance policy.  Insurance protects income. A good way to know whether to use "insure" rather than "ensure" is to remember that  "insure" and "income" both start with "in".

Ensure - Ensure is something you do to guarantee that an event will or won't happen.  A good way to know whether to use "ensure" is to remember that "guarantee" has two e's at the end and "ensure" starts with "e".

Assure - Assure is something that's done for a person or a group of people or an animal to remove anxiety or doubt.  Only things that are "alive" can be "assured."  Both begin with "a".
